Non-existent authors.

چکیده
Authorship of bioscientific papers is a serious business. Most journals have policies that encourage transparency, making it clear who did what, but some authors take it less seriously than editors might like, and indexers don’t always get it right. Searching for common abbreviations (⇓) in PubMed (1809–2017), Embase (1974–2017), Ovid Medline (1946–2017), Philosopher’s Index (1966–2016), and PsychINFO (1806–2017), I found three types of non-existent authors: apparent authors (such as Et Al and Anon), which conceal the identities of real contributors, depriving them of recognition; apparent authors whose “names” are postnominals, such as “Phil D”; and authors whose initials have been used as surnames and surnames as initials. Here I explore two of these categories in more detail, and discuss other forms of authorship. Et al and anon

Steady concentration distribution of hydrogen in elastic membranes during hydrogen diffusion
A critical discussion on non-linear steady-state concentration profiles for hydrogen diffusion in elastic metallic membranes, proposed by other authors, is provided based on mathematical analysis and numerical simulation. It is shown that the non-linear distribution is non-existent and the linear form is the only solution for the ideal solid solution phase. 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All righ...
متن کاملExpressivism about Reference and Quantification over the Non - Existent without
Can we believe that there are non-existent entities without commitment to Meinongian metaphysics? This paper argues we can. Let’s say we propose that, as appearances suggest, names like Pegasus refer to non-existent things. They are not, in other words, empty names, names without referents. Rather, they are terms that refer, and so have referents, but the referents do not exist. Moreover, at le...
متن کاملHigher-order Vagueness and Borderline Nestings – a Persistent Confusion
This paper shows that authors who have recently argued that higher-order vagueness is incoherent, paradoxical, illusory or non-existent invariably confound elements of higher-order vagueness (of the kind relevant to the Sorites paradox) with elements of a different paradigm of borderline borderline cases; and that, once the elements of that other paradigm are removed from the description of hig...
متن کاملAbout the Possibility of a Proper Philosophy of Globalization
The notion of globalization is used in different contexts and in different meanings; the notion mixes fact and fiction – existent and non-existent. The notion of globalization refers to, for example, economic, political and cultural processes which exceed nation-state borders. There is no philosophical, i.e. conceptual foundation of globalization. Western philosophical metanarratives are interp...
متن کاملMuch Ado about Nothing
Let us start with non-existent objects. I will assume a certain view of these. I will not defend it here; this has been done elsewhere.2 The point in what follows will be to apply it. So let me simply summarise the core points. Some objects do not exist: fictional characters, such as Sherlock Holmes; failed objects of scientific postulation, such as the mooted planet Vulcan; God (any one that y...
